Twin Creek Historical Bike Ride a Success

On Saturday morning, September 14, Osborne County was invaded.  The Twin Creek area, ten miles south of Osborne on 281 highway, was invaded by bicyclists seeking to learn more about local history.  Twenty-one riders, tour guide Von Rothenberger, and four support volunteers took part in the Twin Creek History ride.

Some of the stops along the eighteen-mile route included: an 1891 log cabin; a clandestine schoolhouse move; a WWII bomber crash site; the communities of Twin Creek and Dial; a deposit of semi-precious stones; and other interesting geologic features.

After a demonstration of dousing to find lost gravesites, the group headed for Covert Creek Lodge for an after-ride feast of BBQ brisket, with homemade pie and ice cream for dessert.

This ride was taped by a film crew for the Kansas PBS program Sunflower Journeys.  The segment is expected to air next spring.

Ride organizers were pleased with the turnout and the interest these tours are generating beyond the borders of Osborne County, as ten of the twenty-one riders were from outside the county.   The whole county benefits from the money spent for meals, lodging and other needs by the participants of these events.  Historic Bike Tours are another example of strengthening and diversifying our countys economy through tourism.
